The Mother-In-Law

The Mother-In-Law

“Expressions of Empathy (Volume III) – Human Nature vs. the Nature of the Human” Oil on Canvas
A proper introduction might be the best way to become acquainted with relatives of your beloved companion; especially the mother. How will you live? What can you afford? Where do you work?
Are you pregnant? Will you have time for children? These questions may be among many inquiries asked by an incessant soon-to-be mother-in-law. The background of this composition is a black & white checkered wall paper to symbolize opposition, resistance, and positive/negative tension. A bright coral colored octopus with unfurling tentacles, is used to represent the mother. Her mission is to delve into the situation to prevent any unfortunate circumstances. The bright colors, and oddly contrasting patterns in the room, are to signify the contradiction to the mother’s sense of order and control. The young couple strains to keep their composure as the dinner affair has gone amuck.
